Poverty,
is a major concern of developing economies, a lot of work has been
done through global partnerships with different economies, just to
better the living standard of a common man.
Man’s
interaction with the environment has a lot of impact on the
environment. The mindset of many people as regarding waste
management, blockage of drainage channels, illegal dumping of refuse,
un-monitored construction of sewage channels etc has contributed
largely to the recent floods in Lagos and many parts of Nigeria.
Flood
has caused a lot of damages to homes, public facilities like electric
poles, roads etc. It has even desroyed many lives as well. Nigeria as
a developing country in Africa has it’s share in this environmental
challenge.
My
last project on flood, used GIS as a tool to forcast areas liable to
flood along Yewa river in Ogun State. GIS as a tool, helped build a
database of the region under study; satellite images were used as
source for mapping; and the procedure entails digitizing the area
under study on the ArcGIS software.
As
an IT professional and geographer, software tools can be used to
analyse the environment, to gain proper reference for environment
policy makers.
There
are various various projects that can be funded to help monitor the
environment, this engagements are:
-
Development of database for the entire population, biometric registration and facial capture.
-
CCTV coverage of strategic areas, such as bus stops, streets, estates etc.
-
Enviromental law Enforcement agents .
Other
engagements include active govenrmental involvement in waste
disposal, drainage clean-ups etc.
The
public has to be enlighthened on the dangers of disposing refuse to
drainage channels, street corners, bridges and bus stops. These has
caused environmental pollution with diverse health consequences.
Health
they say is wealth, aside the loss of homes, businesses to flood,
health is a major factor to be considered, as the environment now is
constantly under attack.
In
Conclusion, GIS as a tool, can support spatial information for policy
makers, and environmental protection experts, in analysing the
environment, so it can be protected with policies and enforced to
reduce events of floods that has further increased Poverty, in
Nigeria and Africa as a whole.
